Absa Bank Kenya has confirmed the appointment of Yusuf Omari as its new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.

In a statement on Thursday, September 10, the bank said the appointment takes effect immediately.

"We are pleased to announce the appointment of Yusuf Omari as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Absa Bank Kenya, with immediate effect," the statement read.

Absa described Omari as a seasoned banking executive whose extensive experience positions him to steer the bank into its next phase of growth and development.

"A seasoned banking executive with more than two decades of leadership experience spanning finance, treasury, risk management, governance, sustainability, strategy and transformation, and executive management, Yusuf is well positioned to lead the next chapter of our business," the statement added.

The bank expressed confidence that Omari’s leadership and experience would support the implementation of its strategic priorities while creating value for customers, clients and other stakeholders.

"We are confident that his experience and leadership will continue to advance our strategic priorities in Kenya and deliver sustained value for our customers, clients, and stakeholders," the statement further read.

Omari was on Monday, June 29, appointed the interim CEO following the resignation of Abdi Mohamed.

In a statement, the bank said Mohamed resigned from the role to pursue other career opportunities.

Mohamed served as the CEO and Managing Director of Absa Bank Kenya for three years.

"The Board of Directors of Absa Bank Kenya Plc ("Absa") hereby announces the resignation of Abdi Mohamed from the role of Managing Director and CEO, effective 30 June 2026, to pursue other career opportunities.

"Mr. Mohamed is leaving the Bank after a 32-year career during which he served in various leadership roles, including the last three years as CEO and MD of Absa Bank Kenya," the statement read.

Before taking up the role in Kenya, Mohamed served as the Managing Director of Absa Bank Tanzania. 

"During his tenure, Mr. Mohamed has steered the Bank through defining moments that have not only enhanced organizational resilience but also created strong business growth, leading to the doubling of the Absa Kenya share price over a three-year period," the statement added.

Notably, hours after resigning, I&M Group PLC announced his appointment as the incoming CEO of I&M Bank Kenya Limited.
