According to Ruto, berths 11 to 14 and berths 23 and 24 will be rebuilt and modernized so as to increase the port of Mombasa’s capacity from 2.5 million TEUs to 4.5 million TEUs.
“I want to announce to the people of Kenya that we are now going to expand, modernize and build afresh berths 11 to 14 and berths 23 and 24 so that we can expand the capacity of the Port of Mombasa from 2.5 million TEUs to 4.5 million TEUs in the next three years,” he said.
The President highlighted that the expansion of the Port of Mombasa will support the economy of Mombasa County and the country at large.
“That will expand the economy of this city and the Republic of Kenya,” President Ruto added.
At the same time, President Ruto announced that the construction of the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone (SEZ) will commence in December 2026.
Ruto mentioned that approximately Ksh70 billion will be invested in the development of the SEZ.
“Almost $300 million (Ksh70 billion) will be invested in the development of the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone,” he announced.
This comes days after President Ruto announced plans to extend the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line to Tanzania.
Speaking on Sunday, September 27, during a church service in Mwatate, President Ruto said the SGR will be extended from Voi to Taveta and then into neighboring Tanzania.
“During the Jubilee government, we started constructing the Standard Gauge Railway from Mombasa to Nairobi, and then extended it to Naivasha.
“Now, we have taken it from Naivasha to Kisumu and Malaba through Bungoma. But I said that even as we build the railway linking our East African Community, it would also be good to connect Voi to Tanzania,” said Ruto.
The Head of State noted that the government has already allocated Ksh5 billion for the extension of the railway line.
President Ruto also mentioned that SGR stations will be set up in Mwatate, Bura, Mwakitau and Taveta.
