Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa has explained why the telecommunications company is involved in the Social Health Authority (SHA).
In an interview on Wednesday, October 23, the CEO said the company is part of the program to support its customers to live better.
"If Safaricom is not involved in those big programs like SHA, who will? We always rise to the occasion. We have to support our customers to live better. The big sectors that affect our population are agriculture, education, and healthcare.
"Even on the foundation side, we focus on healthcare and education because those are the places where you make a huge impact on the broader population. That is the reason why we are involved," Ndegwa explained.

President William Ruto launched SHA on October 1, 2024, terming it a pivotal step in Kenya's Universal Health Coverage initiative.
This new body replaces the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) and introduces three funds, namely the Primary Healthcare Fund, the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), and the Emergency, Chronic and Critical Illness Fund.
Ruto emphasized that this overhaul aims to provide efficient, affordable healthcare to all Kenyans, ensuring no one is denied emergency treatment as mandated by the Constitution.
Ruto reassured citizens about the transition from NHIF to SHA, urging patience during this period.
"I call on all Kenyans to have faith and a little patience. In a matter of weeks, it will be serving efficiently. The value for money in this scheme will be undeniable once the migration from the NHIF is completed and the fund is fully operational," he said.
Ruto stated that SHA would operate smoothly once fully migrated from NHIF, promising that no jobs would be lost in the process.
“I want to assure all former employees and those serving under SHA that none will lose their jobs. We will make sure that everybody who has served is transitioned into the current one," he added.
