Farmers have a reason to smile after Treasury CS Ukur Yatani revealed the government allocation for fertilizers in the 2022/23 budget.
Reading the budget in parliament on Thursday, Ambassador Yatani said that the government had allocated Sh3 billion to subsidize farmers during the current planting season.
“The price of fertilizers has more than doubled in the last year and still rising. To safeguard food security in the country, the government has allocated Sh3 billion to subsidize farmers during the current planting season,” CS Yatani stated.

The CS further said that his Ministry further proposed allocating further Sh2.7 billion in the financial year 2022/23 to cushion farmers while sustaining food production.
While reading the budget in parliament, Yatani said that Kenyans were extensively consulted during the preparation of the budget.
He maintained that among key issues raised by Kenyans were unemployment, high cost of living, and the public debt burden.
“This budget tackles most of the concerns raised by Kenyans including the high cost of living. Most of the issues were as a result of COVID-19 effects. We have put up budget policies for improved livelihoods," Yatani stated.
The 3.3 trillion budget is the last for President Uhuru Kenyatta’s tenure in government.
