Why Over 119 Vehicles Recalled By KRA Are Under Investigation

The Kenya Revenue Authority has recalled over 119 vehicles believed to have been imported into the country unprocedurally. 

A notice by KRA indicated that the vehicles are under investigation.

The owners of the vehicles were directed to:

"Present the cars together with the original ownership, sale agreement, transfer and importation documents to the Commissioner of Intelligence, strategic operations, investigations and Enforcement."

The vehicles are expected to undergo inspection to verify conformity with legal procedures of acquisition.

Reports indicate that some vehicles could have breached excise duty processes in their acquisition hence the directive.

The inspections of the vehicles will take place from September 27 to October 6, in various offices across the country. 

Among the offices where the inspection will be conducted include Forodha House- Mombasa, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport - Nairobi, Kiptagich House - Eldoret and Nakuru - Generation House GeorgeMorara AvenueOthers are Nyeri – Veka Plaza, Isiolo – Landmark Hotel or Kisumu Swan Centre.

Owners of the listed vehicles have been cautioned against disregarding the directive. 

 "A person who, when required in accordance with this Act to produce any book, document, or other thing, in his or her possession or under his or her control to perform any act, refuses or fails to do so; commits an offence," KRA stated in its notice.

Section 204 of the East African Community Customs Management Act, 2004 states that whoever fails to comply with such directives of presenting their vehicle attracts a fine amounting to over Sh732,000.
