Martha Karua's Statement After Chebukati Refused to Appear Before Bi-Partisan Committee

Narc Kenya Leader Martha Karua has slammed  Former IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati for declining to appear before the bi-partisan talks to shed light on the 2022 elections.

Karua who has maintained that the August 9, 2022 elections were not free and fair said the IEBC boss failed to show up owing to the feeling of guilt.

"The guilty are afraid," Karua stated while reacting to a report of Chebukati declining to show up at the bi-partisan committee.

Chebukati on Thursday said he, Former Commissioners Boya Molu and Abdi Guliye opted to keep off the bi-partisan talks as they did not see the reason why they should attend.

Chebukati argued that the reason they were being invited to the committee was based on issues already determined by the relevant agencies.

Chebukati said appearing before the committee would amount to betraying many IEBC staff who were tortured and others killed for performing their mandate diligently, as such he called for the formation of the commission of inquiry to handle the matter.

"We won't be appearing before the National Dialogue Committee to discuss issues that have been resolved. With tremendous respect to the Committee, our participation in the talks would be an unmitigated betrayal to the IEBC Staff who were tortured and murdered," he said.

"Instead a Commission of Inquiry should be formed."

He said the inquiry should also uncover the reasons why some of the Commission abducted, tortured or even killed during the election period; and identify persons responsible for those atrocities.

The 'Cherera four'  however appeared before the committee.

They include former vice chairperson Juliana Cherera and commissioners Francis Wanderi, Irene Marsit, and Justus Nyangaýa.
