Ten people on Saturday, December 16 evening died after a 14-seater matatu they were travelling in was involved in an accident along Kikima-Machakos road in Makueni County.
National Police Service (NPS) in a statement said the matatu belonging to Makos Sacco lost control and rolled severally.
“Today 16/12/2023 at around 1830 hrs along Kikima-Machakos Road,10 passengers lost their lives, after matatu reg.KCQ 920H belonging to Makos Sacco, that they were travelling in, lost control and rolled several times,” the statement read in part.
NPS noted that seven passengers sustained serious injuries in the accident and were rushed to Mbooni Subcounty Hospital for medical attention.
“Seven other passengers were seriously injured and were rushed to Mbooni Subcounty Hospital in critical condition,” NPS added.

The matatu which was carrying 17 passengers was heading to Machakos from Kikima when it was involved in the horrible accident.
Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior has sent condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the accident. He also warned drivers to exercise caution during the festive season.
This comes days after Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo called on motorists to exercise caution while travelling during the festive period.
PS Omollo warned that the ongoing heavy rains across the country has caused impaired visibility.
"The Ministry calls on all drivers to be conscientious road users, demonstrating care and consideration for the well-being of everyone sharing the highways," said Omollo.
