He is remembered as the former record holder for the 3000 meters steeplechase for over a decade. Rono also set the world record for the 5000 meters twice, in 1978 and in 1981.
“On behalf of the Athletics Kenya Executive Committee and athletics fraternity, we wish to convey our sincere heartfelt condolence to his family, friends, and the entire athletics fraternity during this trying moment. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Athletics Kenya added.
Rono’s death comes days after Marathon World record holder Kelvin Kiptum died in a gruesome road accident in the Kaptagat area along the Elgeyo Marakwet-Ravine Road.
One occupant in the vehicle survived the accident and was taken to hospital.
The cabinet on Wednesday agreed to accord Kiptum a decent send-off. Kiptum will be laid to rest on Saturday, February 24.
