KDF Speaks after Its Soldier's Fight with Police in Mombasa

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has taken exception in an incident in which its soldiers engaged members of the National Police Service (NPS) in a scuffle.

A group of armed forces rangers en route to the Mtongwe Navy Base took on police officers at the Likoni Ferry, injuring two of them in the process.

The fight started when a soldier assaulted a security guard at the ferry island.

This caught the attention of the police who went to find out what had ensued.

But the KDF rangers would turn their rage to the law enforcers.

Two of the police officers were injured in the scuffle that attracted the attention of the public.

At some point, the civilian onlookers sided with the police by hurling stones at the soldiers.

Reacting to the incident, the armed forces termed it as 'highly regrettable'.

It explained that a probe had been started by the investigators from the military police and other relevant agencies to establish the events.

"This evening at the Likoni Ferry, KDF soldiers were involved in a scuffle that has been circulated through various social media mediums. To establish the circumstances leading to the incident, Military Police and requisite investigation agencies are currently handling the matter. The incident is highly regrettable. As KDF personnel, we are beholden to the core value of professionalism," the armed forces said in a statement sent on Saturday, April 28.

This came days after another incident in Lodwar involving KDF army men and police officers.

The KDF soldiers allegedly stormed the Lodwar Police Station demanding the release of their colleagues detained after a supposed assault on a traffic cop.
