The Immigration and Citizen Services State Department has announced that its Nairobi office will remain open this Saturday, May 18.

In a notice on Friday, May 17, the department said that the extension of its services to Saturday will allow passport applicants to collect the document.

It urged all passport applicants in Nairobi who had received a notification to take advantage of the extension to pick up their passports.

“To expedite the collection of passports, our Nairobi office will be open on Saturday, May 18, 2024, from 9 am to 1 pm. Applicants who applied for passports in Nairobi and have received notification to collect their passports are encouraged to take advantage of the extended service,” read the notice.

On Monday, May 13, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki announced that 724,000 passports that were part of a historical backlog that had accumulated between June 2021 and March 2024 had been printed and 684,500 of them had already collected by their holders.

The CS attributed the delay in printing passports to delays in getting exchequer funding, paying pending supplier debts, dismantling corruption cartels, and acquiring and installing modern, high capacity printing equipment.

He, however, said that going forward, the document will be ready in 21 days for all new applicants.

"Going forward, all new applicants will receive their passports within 21 days from the date of application, while urgent cases will receive theirs immediately. Effective August 1, 2024, the waiting period will be reduced to 7 days and further to 3 days effective November 1, 2024," Kindiki remarked.
