Police Officers who were present during the court session responded and shot the officer.

Makadara Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti has been injured after being shot by a police officer at the Makadara Law Courts in Nairobi.

The incident occurred on Thursday, June 13 after the Magistrate canceled bond for the officer’s wife after she jumped bond and failed to offer a satisfactory explanation.

The police officer had reportedly traveled from Kisumu to attend the case against his wife, who had requested to be released by the court pending the outcome of the case.

Following the ruling, the officer opened fire on the Makadara magistrate, injuring her on the hip. Police officers present at the court session responded and shot and killed the policeman.

"Police Officers on the scene responded and neutralized the shooter, and the Magistrate was rushed to the hospital for treatment. Preliminary reports indicate that the shooter is a Police Officer who is married to the suspect," Judiciary said in a statement.

Kivuti and the injured citizen were taken to hospital for emergency treatment, while the body of the officer was moved to the morgue.

Meanwhile, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrived at the Madaraka Law Courts as investigations into the incident continue.

The Judiciary urged Kenyans to be calm as law enforcement agencies investigate the incident.

Further, the Judiciary announced it would enhance security for all judicial officers.

"We would also like to assure all Judicial Officers, Staff, and Court Users of their safety and security in all our premises. We will enhance our security protocols for civilians visiting our courts as well as security officers who visit courts in circumstances that do not require them to be armed," the Judiciary added.
