Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma has asserted that all Azimio MPs will hold a mandatory meeting on Tuesday, June 18, at 5:00 pm.

In a post on X on Sunday, June 16, the lawmaker said that the meeting was meant to deliberate on strategies to defeat the Finance Bill 2024.

"Azimio MPs to hold mandatory meeting on Tuesday, 18th June 2024, at 5pm to deliberate on and come up with strategies to defeat the Finance Bill 2024. Fighting for the people is our sacred duty!" the MP remarked.

The National Assembly Committee on Finance and Planning retreated on June 13 to prepare a report after the conclusion of public participation before presenting it to Parliament on Tuesday for debate and voting by MPs.

On Friday, June 14, ODM Party Secretary General Edwin Sifuna directed all ODM MPs to suspend any planned trips until the Finance Bill 2024 vote is taken.

The lawmaker noted that ODM MPs should suspend activities that would see them out of Nairobi during the consideration of the bill.

“All members of the National Assembly are to suspend any planned trips or any activities that would see them out of Nairobi for the duration of the consideration of the Finance Bill 2024 and that means from the day tabling on Tuesday next week until a vote is taken,” Sifuna stated

His remarks came after Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka directed Azimio MPs to reject the bill.

At a Friday press conference, Kalonzo urged opposition lawmakers to lead the charge in rejecting the bill.

“All well-meaning Kenyans must oppose the Finance Bill 2024 and have thus instructed all our parliamentary members to lead from the front in rejecting this punitive bill in totality,” Kalonzo remarked.

The Finance Bill 2024, which has received heavy opposition from Kenyans, seeks to increase revenue for the government through heavy taxation.
