Governors from the Coastal region have declined a meeting with President William Ruto at State House Nairobi to discuss the muguka ban.
Speaking on Sunday evening Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro said they needed time to consult other coastal leaders before meeting President Ruto.
State House Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei had invited the six coast governors for a meeting with President Ruto at State House on Tuesday, June 18, 2024 at 2.30 pm.
Governor Mung’aro noted that they will be ready to meet the Head of State after a consultative meeting with all coastal leaders scheduled on Friday next week.
“We have an invitation from the honorable president, and we thank him for seeing it fit to call us as coastal governors to discuss this issue of muguka. After the consultations we have had with our members of parliament and senators, it is apparent that the president will have to excuse us a bit.

“We will not be able to meet with him this Tuesday, but we will meet with him after our meeting which will be held next Friday with all the coastal political leaders and various stakeholders,” said the Kilifi Governor.
This comes weeks after the coastal governors declined to honour a meeting called by Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi to resolve issues around muguka ban.
The governors claimed that the CS would be an impartial arbitrator and called for President Ruto to lead the consultations.
They also requested the inclusion of key stakeholders like the National Authority for the Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NACADA) and the Ministry of Health.
"We request and invite your support towards a consultative meeting with the head of State to include the Cabinet Secretaries of Health, Internal Security and Head of Public Service and Secretary to the Cabinet," the governors stated.
