The Orange Democratic Party (ODM) has demanded for the dismissal of the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome.
In a statement on Friday, July 12, ODM said President William Ruto’s move to fire Cabinet Secretaries was a good start.
The Raila Odinga-led party called on President Ruto to extend the move to IG Koome and Nairobi Police Commander Adamson Bungei.
ODM also demanded that the Head of State take action on all police officers who were allegedly involved in harming protesters during the anti-government demos since 2023.
“The decision to fire his cabinet was a good start in our view. But the feeling across the country is that there still exists an atmosphere of fear that makes it impossible for people to speak freely.

“Ruto must immediately fire the IG of Police, the Nairobi Police commander, and apprehend all Police Officers implicated in the murders of the over 200 innocent Kenyans in peaceful protests since last year,” read the statement in part.
The opposition party further demanded the compensation of victims who were brutalized during the recent demos.
“We call for a national amnesty for all persons arrested or charged in connection with protests, and compensation for all victims of police brutality,” ODM added.
On Thursday, July 11, President Ruto dismissed all Cabinet Secretaries save for the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi.
The Head of State went on to say he would be engaging in extensive consolations across different sectors and political formations to set up a new and broad-based government.
