The accident involved a 14-seater Public Service Vehicle (PSV) which was heading to Kisumu and a trailer that was heading towards Londiani.
Preliminary reports indicate that the trailer lost control and rammed into the matatu which was heading to Muhoroni town. The driver of the trailer fled the scene after the accident.
The police and first responders have been deployed to the scene of the accident to help evacuate the victims.
Photos seen by nairobileo.co.ke showed the Matatu completely damaged and locals at the scene trying to help the passengers.

Out of the ten passengers who died in the accident five were men while four were women.
Three passengers who were injured during the accident were rushed to Muhoroni sub-county hospital for treatment.
The bodies of the passengers who succumbed were moved to St. Vincent Mission Hospital mortuary in Muhoroni.
The accident comes days after 12 people succumbed after being involved in a nasty road crash in the Nithi Bridge area, Tharaka Nithi County. Among the fatalities were two minors; the others were eight female and two male adults.
The accident involved a Nairobi-bound hired private Toyota Hiace and a Toyota Hilux driven toward Chogoria.
Tharaka Nithi police commander Zaccheus Ng'eno said the driver behind the Nairobi-bound vehicle was not conversant with the road and thus swerved off its lane to collide with the oncoming car headed to Meru.
"Preliminary investigations show that the motor vehicle coming from the Meru had not regularly used this road. We may assume that the driver did not take to his lane as expected hence the head-on collision," said Ng'eno.
