Kericho Governor Erick Mutai has been impeached by the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs).
In a voting exercise that was conducted on Wednesday, October 2, 31 ward representatives voted in favour of the impeachment motion.
16 MCAs boycotted the session and the voting exercise.
"I declare that the motion is passed and the governor, Dr Erick Mutai stands impeached by the County Assembly," the speaker announced after the voting exercise.
Mutai was accused of violating the constitution, abuse of office and misuse of public resources among others.
What Next
Meanwhile, the impeachment of the governor is set to be challenged given that a court order had been issued by the high court stopping the exercise from being undertaken.
“That pending the inter parties hearing of the motion dated 1/10/2024, interim conservatory orders are issued against the respondents jointly and severally suspending and staying the debating considering and or acting upon the notice tabled on 23/09/2024 and the motion moved on the 24/09/2024 for the removal of the applicant- governor from office,” read part of the court order.
If not challenged, the impeachment motion will be moved move to the Senate as prescribed in the law.
At the Senate, both the sponsor of the motion and the governor will be given time to give evidence and defend their case.
A vote will then be taken by the Senators after the hearings.
