At least 10 people died and several others were injured following a tragic road accident near Iguhu Yala Bridge along the Kisumu-Kakamega Road.

In a statement on Wednesday, November 13, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and wished strengthen upon them at this difficult time.

"On my own behalf and on behalf of the County Government of Kakamega, I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and pray that God grants them the strength to bear this profound loss. I also wish a swift recovery to those hospitalized following the accident," the statement read in part.

Barasa said seven people died on the scene with two dying while undergoing resuscitation and another pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

"This unfortunate carnage involved two 14-seater public service vehicles traveling toward Kisumu and an oncoming trailer. Seven individuals lost their lives at the scene, two succumbed while undergoing resuscitation at Iguhu Level 4 Hospital, and another was pronounced dead upon arrival at Kakamega General Hospital," the statement added.

In the wake of the accident that involved a fuel tanker and two matatus, Barasa said 12 casualties are currently receiving treatment at Iguhu Hospital.

He added that nine others who are in critical condition have been referred to Kakamega County General Hospital for more specialized treatment.

"We have mobilized our doctors and emergency teams, who are working tirelessly to provide the necessary treatment and care to the injured. As we enter the holiday season, I urge all road users, particularly drivers, to exercise caution and adhere strictly to traffic rules to prevent further tragedies," the statement further read.

Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa expressed his condolences to families that lost their loved ones and wished complete recovery to the surviving victims. 

"For those injured and currently receiving care in hospitals, I wish you a swift and complete recovery. May the days ahead bring you healing and peace. I commend the prompt intervention by Fernandes Barasa which facilitated the timely evacuation of victims to various medical facilities. It is heartening to see Kakamega health officials mobilizing resources effectively to save lives in this crisis," the MP said.
