Long-distance runner Sheila Chepkirui has been promoted to the rank of a Corporal (Cpl) following his win at the 2024 New York City Marathon.
In a statement on Thursday, November 14, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) said Chepkirui was promoted to the rank by Commander Combat Engineers Brigade Brigadier Victor Mburu at Thika Barracks.
Mburu congratulated Chepkirui for her stellar performance at the New York City Marathon, describing her as a role model to sports personalities within the disciplined forces.
"We are happy and proud of you. We are very grateful for your continued achievements and for representing Kenya and KDF so well. May God bless you in your training and all your future endeavours. Keep encouraging, supporting, and mentoring the upcoming KDF athletes," he said.

Chepkirui delivered a stunning performance at the New York City Marathon, clinching victory in her debut at this prestigious event with a time of 2:24:35.
The 33-year-old showcased her strength by executing a powerful final half-mile, outpacing reigning champion Hellen Obiri, who finished second in 2:24:49, and veteran Vivian Cheruiyot, who took third at 2:25:21.
Throughout the race, Chepkirui maintained a strategic approach, running in a large pack for the first half before gradually increasing her pace.
At 35 kilometres, she was one of only three women remaining in contention.
This victory marks Chepkirui's first win at a World Marathon Major, having previously set a personal best of 2:17:29 in Valencia.
