A school bus carrying learners has been involved in an accident in Mbooni, Makueni County.

11 learners have sustained injuries following a road accident near Kikima Market, Mbooni Sub County, Makueni County. 

Confirming the Saturday evening, November 23, incident, the Kenya Red Cross disclosed that the incident involved a school bus that was carrying learners before it overturned at the scene. 

The humanitarian organization noted that several learners were trapped following the incident, and a response team in collaboration with the county government of Makueni aided in rescue operations.

"A school bus carrying children has been involved in a road accident near Kikima Market, Mbooni Sub County, Makueni.

"Children trapped in the overturned bus are being rescued by response teams led by the county government," the Kenya Red Cross stated.

However, in a subsequent update, the Kenya Red Cross declared that 11 learners sustained injuries and no fatalities were reported.

"Update: 11 children sustained injuries and have been taken to Mbooni Level 4 Hospital. No fatalities have been reported," the Kenya Red Cross remarked.

The incident comes after five people were killed following a tragic road accident in the Kibirigwi area on the Sagana-Karatina road in Kirinyaga County.

The incident on Friday, November 22, involved a lorry carrying bags of maize and two private vehicles.

According to the police, the lorry rammed into the two vehicles, resulting in the fatalities.

On November 15, Prime Cabinet Secretary and acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi urged all road users to exercise caution ahead of the festive season even as he ordered all traffic officers to ensure Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) are roadworthy and driven safely.
