In November 2021, the escape of the three drew nationwide attention and saw the government promise a Ksh60 million reward.

A Kamiti Maximum Prison officer has been implicated in the escape of three terror convicts which occurred in 2021.

In a statement by the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) on Tuesday, November 25, it was revealed that the officer aided in the prison break.

The ODPP detailed that the officer moved the convicts from one prison cell to another to help with the scale.

Consequently, owing to the evidence provided to the Kahawa Law Courts, it was ruled that the officer would have a case to answer.

"On 14th November 2021, three terrorism inmates at GK Kamiti Maximum Prison, namely Musharraf Abdalla, Mohamed Ali Abikar, and Joseph Juma, who are currently serving 42, 22, and 15 years of imprisonment, respectively, escaped custody under the watch of the prison wardens," read the statement in part.

"One of the officers was equally found to have a case to answer for the offence of convening a meeting in support of a terrorist group when he allegedly facilitated the movement of terrorist convicts from Cell number 2 to Cell number 6 prior to the prison break."

Meanwhile, other officers have cases to answer for neglecting their duty over the 2021 incident.

"The court at Kahawa ruled that the prosecution, through Principal Prosecution Counsels James Machirah, Ken Amwayi, Harrison Kiarie, and Gideon Kiprono, had established a prima facie case against the 12 senior officers," the ODPP added.

In November 2021, the escape of the three drew nationwide attention and saw the government promise a Ksh60 million reward for information that would lead to the arrest of the trio.

The three convicts were arrested days later in Kitui County while en route to Garrisa County.
