The National Police Service (NPS) has disclosed that no deaths have been reported following a gold mine collapse in Dabel area, Moyale, Marsabit County.
In a statement on Wednesday, December 11, NPS noted that following the reports, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja visited the area to confirm the credibility of the reports.
The police service noted that after discussions with local elders and security agencies, Kanja confirmed that no deaths were reported and no one was trapped following the mine collapse.
"Inspector General of Police, Mr. Douglas Kanja today, December 11, 2024, toured Moyale, Marsabit County on a fact-finding mission following media reports that five people were killed on 10/12/2024 after a gold mine collapsed in Dabel area, with several others still trapped therein.
"After holding discussions with the local elders and security agencies, it was established that there were no reports of deaths or missing persons made so far since yesterday," NPS remarked.

NPS explained that a multi-agency security team supported by the National Youth Service (NYS) was backfilling the mine holes to prevent any tragedies.
Nonetheless, the police service maintained that an order issued by the government to close the gold mine remained in force.
Meanwhile, the IG reiterated the government's commitment to safeguard the safety and security of every Kenyan.
"The IG also addressed members of the local community and reiterated the government's commitment to safeguarding the safety and security of all citizens," NPS stated.
