All Kenyans above the age of 18 can own a house built under the government programme. However, only one house is allocated per ID.


Kenyans who purchase units in President William Ruto's Affordable Housing Programme (AHP) will be issued with a sectional title by the government.

According to the Ministry of Lands and the Affordable Housing Board, the document will be issued to Kenyans who have completed payment for their houses.

Sectional titles are legal documents that give an individual the right to own an apartment within a development such as a storey building.

"A sectional title will be provided to buyers as proof of ownership, once the house is fully paid for," read part of the factsheet published by the government institutions.

"When you purchase an affordable home under the program, you own the house even if it has been built on Government land, as long as you have completed payment."

Payment

One can own a home by making one-time payments or by partnering with financial institutions such as banks for a mortgage.

Through the partnership, one will be required to pay a monthly agreed fee to finance the payment of the house.

"The financing period for an affordable home loan as per the Affordable Housing Act is up to 30 years. If you get a home loan, your monthly payments will not increase over time but will remain fixed over the life of the financing," read the fact sheet in part.

Ownership

In the event of death, the house is transferred to the registered next of kin.

"Houses will be allocated through a fair and transparent system, free of any human intervention or contact, on a 'first past the post' basis," the institutions explained.

"This means that those qualified for allocation will be ordered on a list by the date and time when they fulfilled all the requirements for allocation including saving for the deposit."

Kenyans interested in purchasing a house can begin their application by registering by dialling *832# or *222# on Citizen.
