NTSA revealed that several motorists had been arrested and charged.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has highlighted some of the blunders that have led to the impounding of vehicles and arrests of motorists during the ongoing festive season.

In a report on the ongoing compliance checks on major highways on Friday, December 20, NTSA detailed that several motorists had been arrested and charged in court.

According to NTSA, 19 motorists were arrested in Kwale County for various offences including failure to wear seatbelts.

Driving above stipulated speed limits and contravening insurance guidelines were also noted to be some of the blunders witnessed during the festive season.

Equally, NTSA noted that some motorists, especially those with Public Service Vehicles (PSV) did not have valid licences.

"Several unroadworthy vehicles were impounded on Thursday, December 19. PSV and Commercial vehicles must operate with valid inspection certificates," read the statement in part.

On the other hand, the authority announced that it would continue with the compliance checks on major highways during the festive season.

Notably, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, in his earlier capacity as acting Interior CS, directed the police to crack down on vehicles contravening the set speed limits and operating with licences.

"I direct heightened action against illegal and unlicensed PSVs to prevent them from operating as passenger transport vehicles," Mudavadi directed.

Such vehicles should not be allowed to carry passengers, as they do not meet the required standards for passenger safety as stipulated in the NTSA (Operation of PSV) Regulations of 2014."
