The National Police Service (NPS) now says that Ibrahim Hilal Mwiti, a 24-year-old man whose body was found at the Thika Level Five Hospital mortuary, had been reported missing by his mother in November 2024.
In a statement released on Sunday, January 5, NPS claimed that Mwiti was last seen alive on November 11, 2024, before his mother filed a missing person report at Kamukunji Police Station on November 15, 2024, and at Juja Police Station on November 18, 2024.
"A missing person circulation was done on 22/11/2024 by Juja Police Station after preliminary inquiries had turned negative referencing the 18/11/2024 initial missing person report," NPS remarked.
The police service, however, said that the body of the deceased was discovered on November 12, 2024, past midnight by Juja traffic police officers but was unidentified then.
NPS noted that Mwiti had been knocked down by a hit-and-run vehicle while riding a hired motorcycle at Spur Mall area along the Thika superhighway.

"The body which had visible head injuries was later transported and preserved at General Kago Hospital Mortuary as an unknown due to lack of identification documents at the accident scene, and the motorcycle secured at the Juja Traffic Office," NPS stated.
It added, "Fingerprints of the deceased were taken by Juja Traffic Police, submitted to the National Registration Bureau, and the results dated November 21, 2024, positively identified the body as that of Ibrahim Hilal Mwiti."
The police explained that on January 2, 2025, Mwiti's mother filed an affidavit at the Thika Law Courts requesting a waiver of the postmortem examination in line with her religious beliefs.
The court granted her request, and the body was subsequently released to her.
The police noted that after Mwiti was laid to rest, his mother recorded a statement with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and clarified that his son was not an activist.
"The body was laid to rest at Lang'ata Muslim Cemetery on January 3, 2025. The mother recorded her formal statement with the DCI on January 4, 2025, and stated that Ibrahim was not an activist. NPS urges the media and the general public to refrain from disseminating unverified and misleading information, likely to incite the public," NPS remarked.
