Property of unknown value was destroyed in a fire that broke out at the Narok Bus Park on Wednesday.

Property of unknown value was destroyed in a fierce fire that broke out at the Narok Bus Park on Wednesday, January 8.

While no injuries were reported, the fire which is believed to have been triggered by two gas cylinder explosions, burnt down several stalls in ashes.

The blaze attracted a large crowd of parents and students who were traveling back to school.

Following the incident, Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu issued a statement commending the county's fire department for their swift response and ensuring the safety of park users.

"Our fire engines responded swiftly and successfully contained the fire, preventing further damage to property and ensuring the safety of park users," the Governor stated.

Ntutu also expressed concern over the apparent lapses in safety practices within the bus park, which may have contributed to the incident.

"This incident raises important questions about the safety measures and precautions businesses operating within the bus park are taking to protect themselves and other park users," he said.

Additionally, Ntutu reiterated that strict safety directives had been issued when the bus park was commissioned, including a ban on meal preparation within the premises.

He, however, noted that investigations have commenced to ascertain the root cause of the fire.

"When I commissioned the bus park, I issued a directive prohibiting eateries from preparing meals within the park. We advised that meals be prepared elsewhere and only brought to the stalls for sale.

"We have commenced investigations to determine the cause of the fire and to establish how the gas cylinders found their way into the bus park. Let us prioritize safety at all times to prevent avoidable disasters," he stated.

This comes barely a month after a fire incident in Mlolongo on Monday night claimed one life and destroyed 12 guest rooms and a store.

In an update on December 17, 2024, Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti commended firefighters for their swift response, which helped prevent further loss of lives and property.

"I must commend our team of firefighters who moved swiftly to quell the fire thus preventing further loss of lives and property. The cause of the fire was not immediately established and investigations are underway," she said.

Wavinya added that her team was working closely with the affected individuals to provide guidance on recovery and support measures.
