Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe asked county governments to increase ICU beds as Kenya experiences the third wave of Covid-19 infections.

Speaking on Wednesday, CS Kagwe noted that hospitals in Nairobi are stretched and ICU beds have run out.

"We are urging our hospitals to quickly expand their ICU facilities. We have asked the county task force to identify areas we can convert to isolation facilities. Moving forward, it is likely counties will have to take care of patients at the county level," the Health CS said.

He called on Kenyans to be more responsible as the third wave of Covid spreads fast in the country.

"We are asking for cooperation and responsible behaviour in the fight against COVID-19… I urge Kenyans to be determined to fight this wave. This is not the time to tire but to invigorate our determination so we do not fall on the wayside," CS Kagwe said.

Briefs have indicated that the UK variant of Covid was reported in Nairobi with no history of travel. Surveillance is going on to verify if the new wave is associated with the new variant.

Kenya's COVID-19 positivity is now at 17 Percent after MoH reported 1,279 new infections recorded from 7,450 samples in the last 24 hours. The caseload has now risen to 116, 310.
