Kenya Railways announced that the Madaraka Express SGR services from Nairobi to Mombasa will cease until further notice.

Kenya Railways has announced a new schedule for train services in line with new orders issued by President Uhuru Kenyatta in the fight against Covid-19.

"Following the 15th Presidential Address on the Covid-19 pandemic, Kenya Railways has announced changes in both the Madaraka Express Passenger Service and the Nairobi Commuter Rail service operations," the statement by KR reads in part.

The state agency announced that the Madraka Express will operate as scheduled on Friday, March 26, leaving Nairobi for Mombasa at 10 pm.


The train service will continue to run between 8 am and 6 pm on Saturday, March 27, and Sunday, March 28. On Monday, March 29, the service will run up until noon.

"Thereafter, services will be halted until further notice," Kenya Railways announced.

The passenger service between Nairobi and Suswa will proceed over the weekend.

The agency announced that it will make changes to the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service to ensure it runs without stoppages.

Kenya Railways will release the revised schedule for the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service on March 27.

This comes after President Kenyatta announced stringent measures in the fight against the pandemic.

The Head of State revised curfew hours from between 10 pm and 4 am to 8 pm and 4 am for Nairobi, Machakos, Kajiado,Nakuru and Kiambu.

He also restricted movement in and out of the five counties.
