ODM leader Raila Odinga has raised concern over the rising cases of crimes against children being reported across the country.

The former Premier has urged Kenyans to be alert and report any suspicious occurrences against children in their neighbourhoods, arguing that this is one of the best ways to bring an end to the vice.

According to Odinga, children are the future of Kenya, and as such, they need to be protected.

“We marked the day of the African child against the backdrop of increasing heartbreaking reports of missing, murdered, harmed, and abused children in our country. However hard life may be, we cannot turn our backs on our children. We need vigilance.

“We need to report suspicious activities early and immediately. Let’s end this sad trend. Let us look towards children's health and safety concerns and away from a policy of reuniting children with their birth parents without regard to prior abusiveness,” he said.

Odinga statement’s comes amid increased cases of crimes against children.

A few weeks ago, 8-year-old Shantel Nzembi was kidnapped and murdered in Kitengela. The probe into the incident is still ongoing, with several suspects in custody.

In Kajiado, 11-year-old girl identified as Priscilla Naserian who was reported missing two months ago was recently found dead in a bush at Maili Tisa. Police are currently probing her disappearance and death.

The two cases are among the many that have been reported across the country, raising concern about the safety of our children.
