Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has chided National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi over claims that Nyanza farmers did not receive the subsidized fertilizer from the government.
Speaking on Tuesday, August 15 during the burial of David Chepkwony in Njoro Nakuru County Gachagua claimed that Nyanza farmers did not register to receive the subsidized fertilizer.
The second in command asked the opposition leaders to tell farmers to register and get subsidized fertilizers when the government announces.
“I have seen one leader from the Nyanza region complaining in the parliament about discrimination in the distribution of subsidized fertilizer. He claimed that farmers in Rift Valley and Mt. Kenya regions have received fertilizer while those in Nyanza didn't. The truth is, they are not aware that fertilizer is only given to those who are registered as farmers. On the day of farmer registration, they were participating in anti-government protests,” said Gachagua.
He added, “We will open registration for farmers for the second round, those Azimio people should tell the farmers to go and register so that they can receive the fertilizer.”

This comes days after Wandayi said registered farmers in Nyanza are yet to receive a notification to collect the subsidized fertilizer from the government.
"For unexplained reasons, registered farmers in the region have not yet received a notification to collect their allocation of subsidized fertilizer from their local depots.
“This skewed distribution of subsidized fertilizer is certainly an effort to disenfranchise poor farmers in Nyanza,” Wandayi claimed.
President William Ruto on August 2 announced the second phase of the fertilizer subsidy programme which will see a fifty-kilogram bag retailing at Ksh 2500.
