Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero on Monday, September 4 reached an agreement with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to settle the Sh 427 million tax dispute.
In the deal, the Sh 427 million was reduced to Sh 19.4 million inclusive of a penalty of Ksh2,407,796 and interest of Ksh5,036,405.
The dispute began in 2016 after the taxman conducted an audit on Kidero’s accounts from January 2011 to December 2015 and slapped him with a Sh 680 million tax bill.
The former Nairobi boss moved to the tax appeals tribunal and claimed that the Sh 423 million of the money in his accounts were campaign donations.

The tribunal ruled in his favor but KRA moved to the Supreme Court to appeal the decision. The apex in its ruling said Kidero lacked proof that the money in his accounts actually came from campaign donations.
The Supreme Court allowed KRA to collect the disputed amount from the former Nairobi governor.
Kidero’s deal with KRA comes days after he was charged alongside twelve others with defrauding the Nairobi City County of Sh58 million.
The former governor and the co-accused allegedly committed the offense between January 6, 2014 and January 16, 2014.
They denied the corruption charges and the court maintained an earlier cash bail that they had been granted.
