Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) have made a breakthrough after nabbing a gang leader accused of killing a police officer and injuring another one.
The gang leader who allegedly committed the act on November 20, 2023, in Siaya, was traced at a house in Dandora estate, Nairobi.
Detectives raided the estate in a swift operation and flushed out Edward Wanyama Mukanga aka Ramadhan Mukanga alias Abu Naiyah. The successful arrest followed a tip-off from members of the public who positively identified him.
The suspect travelled kilometres away to avoid being arrested after DCI published his name and put a red alert on him following the heinous act in Siaya.

The 34-year-old suspect is believed to have waylaid two police officers together with a group of other criminals and killed one before escaping his rifle. The police officer and his colleague were escorting examination papers to Mahero Secondary School in Alego Usonga.
"Edward was arrested while in a hideout within Nairobi's Dandora slum on Friday 26th January 2024. Earlier, the police had published names and photos of Abu Naiyah and his associates including Edwin Omondi alias Rashid, Simon Ochieng, Ouma alias Ali Baba, Salim Jackoyo, and Hasting Omondi on the media and appealed to members of the public to share any information on their whereabouts," DCI's statement read in part.
Following the arrest of the gang leader, DCI issued another alert advising the rest of the gang members to surrender before another operation is mounted.
"National Police Service is urging the remaining gang members to surrender to the nearest police station. At the same time, members of the public are urged to share any information on other wanted persons to the nearest police station or through the toll-free number 0800722203," DCI made it clear.
So far, one other suspect is still in police custody in connection with killing the said cop in Siaya. This is after police obtained orders to detain him further to allow for further investigations.
"The National Police Service appreciates the swift action by members of the public that has so far led to the arrest of Hasting Omondi who was apprehended in Usenge Village within the Bondo area of Siaya County in December 2023. The suspect was presented in Kahawa Law Courts on Monday 29th January 2024 where detectives were granted 25 days to complete their investigation."
