Three of the four mysterious men who visited the late World Marathon Record holder Kelvin Kiptum’s home four days before his death have been arrested.
Speaking on Wednesday, February 14 Keiyo South Sub-County Commander Abdullahi Dahir said the three suspects were briefly detained at the Kaptagat Police Station in Elgeyo Marakwet County until 11 am before they were transferred to Iten for further grilling over the death of the marathoner.
“The suspects that were mentioned or alleged by the father of the late Kelvin the marathon world record holder today appeared at Kaptagat police station and now I'm handing them over to the CCIO so the case will be investigated through the office of the CCIO,” Dahir stated.
Kiptum’s father Simon Cheruiyot on Monday appealed to the government to investigate the tragic death of his son.
Cheruiyot recalled receiving four strange visitors at his home who were looking for Kiptum four days before he passed on.
He noted that the four individuals who purported to be government officials refused to identify themselves.
“When the incident occurred, I wondered what these people who came to my house were investigating regarding my child. They refused to identify themselves I told them to provide documents to show that they were government officials, but they refused,” Cheruiyot stated.
Kiptum together with his Rwandese coach Gervais Hakizimana died on Sunday night after a grisly accident in the Kaptagat area along the Elgeyo Marakwet-Ravine Road.
Elgeyo Marakwet County Commandant Peter Mulinge noted that one occupant in the vehicle survived the accident and was taken to hospital.
