Officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) have rounded up two police officers after robbing Al Shabaab suspect Ksh57,000.
According to the statement issued by the anti-graft body, the two security officers namely David Irungu and Hassan Liban Hassan arrested a suspect for suspicion of being a member of the outlawed terrorist group Al Shabaab
During the arrest, the two officers reportedly robbed the Al Shabaab suspect of Ksh57,000 he had in cash. After detaining him, the officers based at Merti Sub-County within Isiolo demanded Ksh50,000 to set him free.
"The police officers demanded a bribe of Ksh50,000 from a suspect they had arrested and detained for allegedly being a member of the outlawed Al-Shabaab Association as a condition for releasing the suspect. The police officers, while armed with a rifle, frisked the complainant and robbed him of an additional Ksh57,000," EACC's statement read in part.

On Monday, February 26, they were presented before the Isiolo Anti-Corruption Court and charged with bribery and robbery with violence charges.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the bribery and robbery with violence charges and were released on a cash bail of Ksh300,000 or surety bond of Ksh500,000.
They are expected to appear in court on May 27 for further hearing of the case. It is however not clear if they will continue executing their mandates as law enforcement officers.
