Joseph Irungu popularly known as Jowie has filed a filed a notice of appeal against his death sentence over the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani.
In the notice on Friday, March 15, Jowie, through his lawyer Andrew Muge, said the appeal was against the conviction and sentence handed down by Justice Grace Nzioka.
“Take notice That Joseph Kuria Irungu alias Jowie, appeals to the Court of Appeal against the decisions of the Honourable Lady Justice Grace Nzioka delivered in open court at Milimani, Nairobi on the 9 th day February 2024 and in her written judgment dated 9th February 2024 whereby the Appellant was convicted of Murder and sentenced to death on 13th March, 2024. The appeal is against the conviction and sentence,” read the notice in part.
Muge noted that Jowie intends to be present at the hearing of the appeal.
Justice Nzioka on Wednesday sentenced Jowie to death after he was found guilty of killing Monica Kimani in 2018.

In her ruling, the High Court Judge pointed out that the murder of the late businesswoman was planned, and intended before being executed.
“I have ordered that the first accused person before this court Joseph Kuria Irungu alias Jowie shall suffer death as provided for the offense of murder under section 204 of the penal code of Kenya and that sentence is set aside by a lawfully competent jurisdiction,” Justice Nzioka ordered.
Before the ruling Jowie had pleaded for leniency and asked Justice Nzioka for a custodial sentence saying he was a first-time offender.
The probation officer in his report said the convict lacks stable partner relationships, exhibits an antisocial personality, and is impartial and a thrill seeker who uses his anger to control others.
