The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has reopened the Nairobi-Garissa Highway after it was closed due to heavy rainfall experienced between Monday and Tuesday.
In a statement on Wednesday, April 10, KeNHA said it has done repairs and made the washout areas accessible to motorists.
“KeNHA is pleased to announce the re-opening of the Nairobi - Garissa (A3) Road. Sections of this Road were temporarily closed due to flooding at Arer and Mororo areas. The Authority has undertaken initial repairs and made the washout areas accessible to motorists,” KeNHA stated.
The authority urged motorists to exercise caution while approaching the previously affected section in the Arrer and Mororo areas.
“To ensure the safety of all road users, motorists are urged to exercise caution as they approach, particularly, the previously affected sections at Arer area on Bangali - Madogo Road and Mororo area on Madogo - Garissa Road,” KeNHA advised.

KeNHA further warned motorists against driving in fast-moving water along the highway.
“The Authority extends gratitude to road users for their patience and cooperation during the closure period and appeals to motorists to continuously adhere to road safety guidelines,” KeNHA added.
This comes after a bus carrying 51 passengers was swept away by floods on the Garissa- Nairobi highway.
According to preliminary reports, the bus was swept by the raging water around 11:30 pm on Monday, April 8.
Reports further allege that the driver of the bus dared to cross the flooded section of the road before it was overpowered and swept on the side of the road.
Most of the passengers escaped unhurt and rescue operations are underway to help those who were recorded sitting on top of the bus.
