Machogu said universities will inform students of the amount they will pay for fees after the results of government funding are out.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has directed the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) and the Universities Fund (UF) to open the funding portal on June 15 for the 2023 KCSE students to apply.

In a statement on Friday, June 7, the CS disclosed that the results of the funding application will be relayed to the applicants or their parents/guardians on July 31.

"I direct the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) and the Universities Fund (UF) to open the Higher Education Funding on June 15, 2024, to allow the eligible students to apply for funding. I wish to notify all parents, guardians and students that results of the funding application process will be released from July 31, 2024," CS Machogu remarked.

Machogu further intimated that the first-year students will report to their institutions according to their admission letters and joining instructions.

He urged universities and funding agencies to sensitize students and parents/guardians about the new student-centered funding model launched by the government, which is based on the assessed level of need of each applicant.

This comes after the Ministry of Education was directed to order all universities to recall admission letters issued to students yet to join in 2024 in order to amend the fee figures.

Appearing before the National Assembly Education Committee on Tuesday, June 4, Higher Education PS Dr. Beatrice Inyangala asserted that the figures in the admission letters had included the entire fee, including the government funding.

The Ministry of Education implemented the new funding model with first-year students joining universities and TVET institutions in September, 2023.
