The SHIF registration exercise will be free of charge.

Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha has announced that the registration of the Social Health Insurance Fund(SHIF) will commence on July 1, 2024.

In a statement on Friday, June 28, Nakhumicha said all Kenyans and residents of Kenya are required to register afresh to benefit from the SHIF.

She noted that the SHIF registration can be done through a USSD code, via the funds’s website with assistance from community health promoters, or through visiting designated registration points.

The Health Cabinet Secretary pointed out that the registration exercise will be free of charge.

“Registration can be done through a self-registration USSD code *147#, the website http://sha.go.ke, with assistance from Community Health Promoters, or by visiting NHIF Offices and other designated registration points. This registration process is free of charge,” read the statement in part.

Health CS Susan Nakhumicha addressing the media,

Nakhumicha mentioned that the Social Health Authority Board has received a list of empaneled facilities from regulatory bodies that will facilitate the Board in initiating contracts for service delivery, ensuring that healthcare providers and facilities are ready for the rollout.

Further, the Health CS said the ministry is reworking plans to align the funding of the Primary Healthcare Fund and the Emergency, Chronic, and Critical Illness Fund following the withdrawal of the Finance Bill 2024.

“In light of the withdrawal of the Finance Bill 2024, which sought to finance the Primary Healthcare Fund and the Emergency, Chronic, and Critical Illness Fund, the Ministry is reworking plans to align with this new reality. Consequently, existing NHIF contributions and benefits will continue until the transition to SHIF is complete,” Nakhumicha stated.

Additionally, she urged health facilities to continue providing services, with all claims to be verified and settled as usual.
