The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has warned Kenyans sharing photos of marked ballot papers on social media.

In a statement on Tuesday, the electoral body warned that Voters were violating the secrecy of the ballot by sharing of photos of marked ballot papers

"Voters are warned that violating the secrecy of the ballot through sharing of photos of marked ballot papers is punishable by law," IEBC said in a statement. 

IEBC warns Kenyans

The Elections Offences Act requires every officer, candidate, or agent in attendance at a polling station to maintain and aid in maintaining the secrecy of the ballot.

A person who contravenes these provisions on secrecy commits an offence and is liable on conviction, to a fine not exceeding Sh 1 million or a jail term not exceeding three years, or both.

Kenyans turned out in large numbers to vote on Tuesday. According to IEBC, 6,567,869 Kenyans had turned up to vote by noon. This equates to 30.65 percent of the 22,120,458 registered voters.
