The agency will be conducting a testing and flushing exercise from Monday, August 26, 2024, to Friday, August 30, 2024.

The Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) has announced it will be testing and flushing out the Kigoro to Gigiri Bulk Treated Water Pipeline.

In a notice on Thursday, August 22, AWWDA said the exercise will take place from Monday, August 26, 2024, to Friday, August 30, 2024.

“Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) would like to inform members of the public living along/near the newly constructed Kigoro to Gigiri Bulk Treated Water Pipeline of the commencement of scheduled testing and flushing/washout of the pipeline from Monday 26th - 30th August 2024,” read part of the notice.

The agency said the exercise is critical to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the pipeline, which is part of the Northern Collector Tunnel Bulk Water System.

AWWDA warned Kenyans living along or near the pipeline to avoid any contact with water discharged from the pipeline.

“Please avoid any contact with the discharged water as it will contain chlorine used for sterilization,” the water agency stated.

AWWDA also cautioned members of the public against accessing restricted areas around the pipeline during the testing period.

The Kigoro to Gigiri Pipeline is a key component of the Northern Collector Tunnel Bulk Water System and is designed to provide 140 million liters of clean water per day to Nairobi and communities along the pipeline route in Muranga and Kiambu Counties.

The 55-kilometer pipeline will transport treated water from the Kigoro Water Treatment Plant to the Gigiri Pumping Station and reservoirs.
