The Office of the Attorney General has directed all gazetted Registrars of Marriage and licenced ministers of faith to submit all marriage certificates in their possession.
In a notice dated Tuesday, September 3, the Attorney General said that the certificates should be submitted to the Registrar of Marriages office in Nairobi within 30 days.
“It is notified to the public that in compliance with Sections 53,54,55,56 and 57 of the Marriage Act, Cap 150, all gazetted Registrars of Marriage/Licensed Ministers of Faith are required to:
“Submit to the Registrar of Marriages office, Nairobi ALL marriage certificates for the marriages already conducted and in their custody within thirty (30) days from the date hereof," read part of the notice.
At the same time, the Registrars of Marriage and licensed ministers of faith are required to scan and upload certificates for marriages conducted from September 1.

The scanned documents should be uploaded to [email protected] and the original certificates delivered within 14 days of the marriage celebration.
“Scan and upload marriage certificates and Registrar’s certificates or special license as the case may be for all marriages to be conducted from 1st September 2024. The same is to be submitted to [email protected].
“Deliver the original marriage certificates to the Registrar of Marriages, Nairobi within fourteen (14) days of the celebration of the marriage," the notice further read.
Speaking in an interview on Monday, September 2, the newly appointed Attorney General Dorcas Oduor stated that the submission of the certificates will ensure that there is a centralised register.
