Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has revealed that the government is on course to identify the students who succumbed during the Hillside Endarasha Academy school fire.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 9, the government spokesperson reiterated that the government would be relying on DNA testing to identify the students, further linking them to their families.

He explained that the use of DNA testing was necessary given that some of the students had been burnt beyond recognition.

Mwaura added that the number of fatalities stood at 21 with three other students still receiving treatment in various medical facilities in the county.

"All the 330 pupils who were boarding at Hillside Endarasha Academy have been accounted for, with 19 parents being given psychosocial support.

"The government pathologist and the DCI are carrying out autopsy and DNA investigations, in order to match the parents with their children who were regrettably burnt beyond recognition. 3 boys are in stable condition at Mwai Kibaki Hospital in Othaya," remarked Mwaura.

On the other hand, he maintained that the government was keen on establishing the cause of the fire incident, which has received global attention. As of the time of publishing, the cause of the accident was yet to be known.

Meanwhile, President William Ruto directed various security agencies to step up their investigations and establish what transpired that fateful night.

The Head of State also cautioned schools against contravening various safety regulations that were set by the government.

"Compliance with government regulations on curbing fire accidents in learning institutions is not negotiable. This is the only insurance we have to effectively prevent the loss of life and limb in schools," Ruto stated.

Ruto's statement came amid fires reported in various schools across the country. Some of the schools that have been affected include Bukhalalire and Ortum High Schools.
