Two suspects have been arrested for attempting to extort Ksh2 million from a Director General of a State Corporation.
In an update on Wednesday, November 20, the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) said Francis Onyango and Abigail Janai demanded the money to drop a petition in court over alleged funds embezzlement at the State Corporation.
"Following receipt of the complaint, the Commission mounted an operation on Friday leading to the arrest of the two suspects at a Nairobi Restaurant after corruptly receiving Ksh1.7 million being part of the Ksh2 million they had demanded," EACC said.
According to the commission, the two suspects are part of a growing number of individuals who file petitions against government officials in court and then demand bribes in order to withdraw the cases.
"The two are believed to be part of a growing number of litigious individuals in the country posing as public-spirited citizens and passionate advocates for good governance who file petitions against Government officials in Court and then seek huge bribes in order to withdraw the cases," EACC added.

Following their arrest, Onyango and Janai were processed at the EACC Integrity Center Police Station and later booked at Kilimani Police Station.
EACC said they have since been released on police bail.
Not so long ago, EACC arrested a man impersonating the Personal Assistant to the County Secretary of Nairobi City County.
In a statement released on September 25, 2024, the commission said William Otieno Okoth solicited a bribe of Ksh 100,000 from the complainant seeking a job opportunity for his wife.
According to EACC, Okoth claimed that the payment would enable him to assist the complainant's wife secure a job as a cleaner in the County Government.
The commission said the suspect deceived the complainant into believing that, as the "PA to the CS," he had influence over County affairs and would arrange for the issuance of an employment letter in exchange for the bribe.
Following this encounter, the complainant reported the matter to EACC which conducted an operation that culminated in the suspect's arrest.
