He expressed that there was a lot of fake news regarding various contracts signed in the rollout of the Universal Health Coverage.

President William Ruto has dismissed reports of corruption in the new Social Health Authority (SHA).

Speaking in Kilifi County on Thursday, December 5, the Head of State acknowledged that there were questions regarding various contracts signed in the rollout of the Universal Health Coverage, terming the reports as fake news.

In particular, he noted that there was media attention regarding a contract signed between the national government and county governments on the procurement of medical equipment.

In response, he maintained that the contracting for the equipment was done in a transparent manner adding that no governor was forced to sign the contract.

"Anybody who says that they were forced by the national government to sign whatever contract are conmen and liars," he stated.

On the other hand, he promised to ensure that there is no graft in the new health insurance cover as was witnessed in the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).

"There is a lot of fake news and false information out there. I want to assure the country that the challenges of fraud and corruption that had bedeviled the NHIF, will never be our insurance plan," he remarked. 

"There we'll be no corruption of SHA as long as I am President."

During his speech, the President also detailed that the national government had remitted some funds to the county governments for the outstanding payments in NHIF.

At the same time, he asked governors to pay their debt to the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) to facilitate the acquisition of drugs across the country.
