In a swift operation following a tip-off from concerned locals, detectives from Rachuonyo North arrested a 34-year-old man suspected of drug peddling and illegal possession of a firearm.
In a statement on Sunday, December 22, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspect, Barnabas Okello, was apprehended at his residence in South Kanyaluo.
Following the suspect's arrest, DCI said detectives seized a loaded firearm with four rounds of ammunition, several rolls of marijuana, and police gear including balaclavas and camouflage clothing.
The suspect had allegedly been seen with a firearm and was also known to engage in the sale of marijuana.
The arrest was carried out by detectives in collaboration with officers from the Kendubay Police Station, who had set up an ambush at Okello’s home after receiving credible reports.

The suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue.
This comes two months after detectives drawn from Buuri East in collaboration with officers from Kathare Police Station have arrested a suspect linked to a string of robberies in the area.
In a statement on October 25, 2024, DCI said Fredrick John Mwenda was arrested following a tip-off from community members.
According to the agency, the operation led the officers to Mwenda’s hideout in Maili Tano village, Ruiri Rwarera location, Buuri East Sub-County.
"Upon a thorough search of the premises, the officers discovered a sterling assault rifle, serial number 001422, with its buttstock missing and barrel shortened.
"Additionally, they recovered 18 rounds of 5.56 mm ammunition and a magazine wrapped in a nylon bag cleverly concealed in a basin full of clothes," DCI said in their statement.
