A fierce shootout between the police and armed bandits has resulted in one fatality.

One civilian has been killed during a fierce gun battle between security officers and armed bandits in Isiolo County.

In a statement on Tuesday, January 21, the National Police Service (NPS) disclosed that following the incident, the police recovered two firearms and 19 cows that had been stolen. 

"The multi-agency security team in Isiolo on January 21, 2025, recovered two firearms, and 19 animals following a fierce fire exchange with bandits that led to one civilian fatality. The livestock had been stolen from Kiwanja area," NPS stated.

The police service noted that recovery of the firearms was part of Operation Maliza Uhalifu which has been ongoing since 2023.

NPS maintained that the operation has made significant progress in restoring peace and normalcy in the areas which had been declared by the government as dangerous and disturbed.

Two firearms were recovered.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, January 14, a multi-agency security team conducting an operation at Namakat Village, Turkana County, recovered 100 goats, one AK 47 assault rifle, one magazine, and 11 rounds of ammunition.

NPS noted that the goats, which had been stolen from a nearby village by suspected bandits, were later handed over to the rightful owner at the GSU camp in Kainuk in the presence of the multi-agency security team.

According to the service, 241 illegal firearms have been recovered since the inception of Operation Maliza Uhalifu.

"So far, a total of 241 illegal firearms and over 15, 345 animals have been recovered, 272 persons are arrested, normalcy resumed and learning activities ongoing," NPS stated.
