Aga Khan passed away on Tuesday at the age of 88.

President William Ruto has mourned the death of businessman and spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslims his Highness Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV.

In a statement on Wednesday, February 5, the President eulogized Aga Khan as an extraordinary leader who went beyond what seemed impossible to help the vulnerable. 

“We are saddened by the passing of The Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslims. He was an extraordinary leader who went beyond what seemed impossible to help the vulnerable through his charities in hospitals and schools. Our thoughts are with the family of His Highness and the wider Ismaili community,” Ruto stated.

Aga Khan passed away on Tuesday, February 4 in Lisbon Portugal at the age of 88 surrounded by his family.

He was the founder and chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network.

In Kenya, the group owns establishments such as Aga Khan University, Aga Khan primary and secondary schools, Aga Khan Hospitals, Nation Media Group, and Diamond Trust Bank (DTB).


The Aga Khan Development Network in a statement said his successor will be announced soon.

“The announcement of his designated successor will follow. Leaders and staff of the Aga Khan Development Network offer our condolences to the family of His Highness and to the Ismaili community worldwide.

“As we honour the legacy of our founder, Prince Karim Aga Khan, we continue to work with our partners to improve the quality of life for individuals and communities across the world, as he wished, irrespective of their religious affiliations or origins,” read part of the statement.

Aga Khan succeeded his grandfather Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan III, as Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims in 1957 at the age of 20.
