Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has confirmed the tragic death of a patient who was fatally stabbed with a kitchen knife within the facility.

In a statement on Friday, February 7, the hospital expressed its condolences to the victim’s family, noting that an internal investigation has been launched.

The circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing remain unclear, but KNH has stated that it is working closely with law enforcement authorities to establish the facts.

"We are deeply saddened to confirm an incident involving the tragic death of a patient at Kenyatta National Hospital. Our thoughts and prayers are with the patient’s family during this difficult time.

"The Hospital is working closely with law enforcement authorities and has launched an internal investigation to determine the facts surrounding this incident," the statement read.

This comes nearly nine years after a cancer patient named Cosmas Mutunga, aged 42, was found dead with severe facial injuries, including a slit throat, at the facility.

Mutunga had been transferred from Ward 8D to Ward 8C shortly before his death. Prior to the transfer, he had expressed fears for his life to a relative.

Investigations revealed that Mutunga had land-related disputes in his rural home, prompting the police to broaden their inquiry to include close family members.

KNH's Chief Executive at the time, Lily Koros Tare, stated that the hospital was cooperating with detectives to uncover the circumstances surrounding the patient's death.

It was noted that there were no CCTV cameras on the ward floors, as they were only installed on the ground floor, which posed challenges to the investigation.
