Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma has weighed in on the high court ruling that declared the Azimio la Umoja coalition as the majority party in the National Assembly.
In a statement on Sunday, February 9, Kaluma termed the court decision as meaningless and denied justice.
The ODM MP pointed out that the Narc Kenya party already left the Azimio coalition while Eugine Wamalwa’s DAP Kenya and Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper Party are eyeing a new coalition with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
“Narc Kenya left Azimio. DAP and Wiper left Azimio for a coalition with Gachagua. Jubilee died barely 5 months after the 2022 elections. Azimio died and was buried long ago. Court declaration that Azimio is the majority party in Parliament unduly delayed and denied us justice - it is no more than a pyrrhic victory; a right decision that gives nothing in substance. Lawyers call this "judicialisation" of politics,” said Kaluma.
On Friday a three-judge bench comprising Justices John Chigiti, Lawrence Mugambi, and Jairus Ngaah overturned a ruling that had been issued by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula who ruled that Kenya Kwanza was the majority side.

The judges noted that the Speaker violated the constitution in his decision highlighting that Wetang’ula counted some parties that had defected from Azimio in favour of Kenya Kwanza.
“The Speaker cannot fault the Registrar of Political Parties. She could not provide what she did not have. The Speaker ought to have presented the agreements that were allegedly submitted during the debate. Without the post-election coalition agreements, he had no basis for his decision,” the court ruled.
Meanwhile, Kalonzo has called for an Azimio parliamentary group meeting on Wednesday next week.
Speaking on Saturday at a funeral service in Kitui County, Kalonzo revealed he has spoken to retired President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga over the PG meeting.
“I have spoken to Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta and on Wednesday we want an Azimio parliamentary group meeting so that we can plan,” said Kalonzo.
