Riandikira Police Post in Kirinyaga County has been closed down due to outstanding rent arrears.
Preliminary reports indicated that the police post, which had been set up at a private building, had accumulated rent arreas amounting to Ksh2 million.
Residents who spoke to Citizen TV over the closure on Tuesday, March 25, lamented the move, calling on the government and the local leaders to intervene.
Some of the residents noted that the closure of the police post would lead to a surge in insecurity in the area.
"As the area residents, we are saying that there will be a lot of insecurity cases should the police be moved from here. We know they have also been living here, but we do not know what has led to this," one resident stated.

"We are praying that they help us pay the rent. They have been helping us to deal with crime like muggings," another resident echoed.
Following the closure of the police post, the officers were transferred to other stations.
In the video, the officers were filmed moving their personal items and those of the station in lorries.
Just like other government institutions, the National Police Service (NPS) under IG Douglas Kanja have been facing challenges of outstanding debt.
For instance, while appearing before Parliament on March 3, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja revealed that NPS owed the county over Ksh800 million in rates.
