The extension approved by MPs will take effect on April 28, 2025.

Members of Parliament on Wednesday, April 4 voted to extend the timeframe for the recruitment of commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

In support of the motion tabled by Suna East MP Junet Mohamed, the MPs supported the move to extend the selection process by 14 days.

The 14-day extension will take effect on Monday, April 28. 2025.

According to Junet, the selection panel needed more time to conduct the interviews for those seeking to head the commission ahead of the 2027 polls.

He explained that the panel would have been unable to complete the process with the current timelines, given the number of applicants.

"Further conscious of the need for the Selection Panel to ensure the recruitment process complies with the constitutional principles of regional balance, representation of the youth and overall inclusivity while ensuring that the interviews are conducted as far as is practicable, within official working days and hours," read the motion in part.

"Now therfrefore, pursuant to the provisions of paragraph 6(2) of the First Schedule to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Act, CAP 7C, the Houses of Parliament resolve to extend the tenure of the Selection Panel for the Recruitment of Persons for appointment as Chairperson and Members of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission by a period of fourteen (14) days from 28 th April 2025."

The selection panel had already completed interviews for those seeking to be the chairperson of IEBC.

The panel is currently conducting recruitment for those seeking to be commissioners.
